I’ve been having to do a lot of “thumbnails” recently. It must have something to do with the decay of the brain.
Anonymous asked: have you ever considered making an anthology of some of the earlier horror of the gag strips that dont really fit into a specific story line? like #1-#315 that are seemingly miscellaneous but flesh out a lot of the characters
A lot of those non-color “Horror of the Gag” comics absolutely terrify me when I try to read them. I’m kind of afraid to look at them too hard.
Anonymous asked: sorry if you've answered this before but who/what would you describe as the biggest literary/artistic influences on your work?
Marc Bell, Jim Woodring, Doug Allen, J. Bradley Johnson, Carl Barks, Dr. Seuss, George Herriman, Gary Panter, Don Marquis, Ron Rege, Tony Millionaire, Kaz, Kim Deitch, Sally Cruikshank.
Anonymous asked: hey what debbie the duck comic book should i start with if im new to the story line and the character? thanks
Debbie #1 and Debbie #2 are a good start, plus the rest of that particular storyline when it is finally drawn. “Big Dogs At Nite,” “Forget Boring Truths,” “The Made-Up Baptism,” “Unfortunate Horse Magazine,” “A County Is A County #1” and “Horror of the Gag #1” all prominently feature Debbie. There is no particular sequence to those events; they all flesh out particular times in her life. There is really no “reading order” to anything other than the order it was drawn, which is probably the most sense-making way to read my comics since you can watch the drawings crumble and collapse and try to grow again month after month after year, much like Debbie herself. You can read all the comics I mentioned at readdanemartincomicbooks.tumblr.com for free, or, if you’d like to support the “work,” you can buy the real comics or the digital comics on the link on the side of this blog. These are all from the last year or so, so they are the most recent representations of Miss Deb. There are several Debbie stories I’m working on now; one in particular is about her days in her late teens in her daddy’s boardinghouse in the mid-30s. Basically she is a character who I can use for anything and she organically adapts herself to most situations, since she is an angry but curious cipher capable of growing or destroying anything. If you look through the archives of this blog, you can see her sordid origins and watch her slowly develop. Thank you for your interest and I’m sorry that this is long-winded and wistful. My break at work is about to end and the sun is going down.
